January 15, 2010 Providing Help for Haiti
Monetary donations are the best early option. Non-monetary donations, including people, equipment, and materials, can quickly overwhelm the response system.
Occupational health and safety for responders is a significant concern.
Responders should be self-sufficient. In general, they will not be able to rely on local resources for food, water, shelter, medical needs, transportation, and security.
For private citizens who are interested in registering to volunteer for the Haiti Response, please go to www.servfl.com and register as a volunteer. When you log on to www.servfl,com click on the REGISTER NOW button. At the Registration Page, click on the radio button where you see “I am a private citizen and I would like to volunteer for the HAITI RESPONSE” and click the Next button. This will take you to the Quick Registration screen. Please complete all the information on the Quick Registration screen and then click on the Next button. That completes the Quick Registration, however please go back into www.servfl.com so you can test your password and input your skills, abilities, language, and more so that the Florida Department of Health can identify and contact volunteers based on their abilities and the needs of the response.
